pictures versus words (viewzi and image-based searching)

April 24th, 2008

Tonight, thanks to Twitter 0-day information, I managed to snag an invite for beta-testing viewzi.com

Viewzi is a new and highly visual way to search that brings all your favorite stuff together in one place.
Oh, and it’s bolder, richer, and more fun.

That is certainly true, as the whole interface is very nice and, after a quick-run through the different views offered, the purpose of each becomes immediately obvious. Picture searches, video searches, shopping searches or just plain’ old trying-to-find-some-information searches.

Therein, however, I feel there may be a minor problem. «Continue Reading»

apache-style license means open-source

November 18th, 2007

Some people got all high and mighty how they are unhappy that Google released Android under an Apache-style license as opposed to using the GPL, and how the company is not holding up to earlier promises and hints that they want to embrace open-source even more. Guess what:  «Continue Reading»

gmail imap

November 1st, 2007

Well it’s been enabled for my accounts, finally, so the first thing I did was to see how I can flag items from my iPhone so that I may review at a more convenient time. No further: simply move the mail into the ‘Starred’ folder and you’re done. Granted, it also removes it from the Inbox view, but as far as I am concerned that is quite all right.

Now, if only Apple’s Mail wouldn’t display these IMAP accounts so weirdly. I am uncertain if it’s a mistake on my part or not, though my other IMAP accounts look just fine.

gmail imap?

October 24th, 2007

Leak or just a very well hidden feature? Well, after poking around with one of my GMail accounts on my iPhone last night, I noticed in the morning it seemed to be behaving as IMAP would. Last I checked - about a month ago - GMail did not support IMAP. But a quick search got me to this page.

I will try these settings on some more clients once I get home and see if they work as advertised. Finally, GMail over IMAP will rule the world of e-mail once and for all :)1

youtube dock

June 13th, 2007

Some of you might have already seen this: when a YouTube clip is done, the “Related” videos are now shown in a fashion identical to that of the Apple dock.

YouTube-Dock

Guess Eric Schmidt on the Board of Apple really does mean more things will be happening between the two companies. Which is a good thing in my books. YouTube is also transcoding all of its videos to h.264 and will begin streaming them to AppleTV. Quid pro quo.

UPDATE: At this point I’ve only been able to see some embedded clips use this feature, however I’m sure it is only a matter of time; on YouTube there is a message advising that “We are currently performing site maintenance so a few features aren’t available. We’ll be back in a bit.”

UPDATE: Added a screenshot in case you didn’t come across this yet.

google mac blog hacked?

April 22nd, 2007

Well maybe hacked is too strong a word… but definitely some follies have taken place. I’ve only spotted it on my RSS just now - but I see others caught glimpse of it too.

The entry does not exist on the blog anymore - but a picture from the blog linked above shows you a little bit of what went on.
