bittorrent DoS problems = busy night for the RIAA

January 17th, 2008

Since news hit the wire today that some versions of µTorrent and the official BitTorrent clients are vulnerable to DoS attacks, I’m sure the RIAA and their lackeys have launched a massive campaign to try and turn off users’ clients, even if only for a little while. Since many people run seedboxes, this could pose a problem.

This could pose a problem in the long run, too. Am I the only one to believe the RIAA will eventually start trying to corrupt trackers and/or clients? Since they seem to be losing legal battles, at some they might decide it’s more effective to find vulnerabilities and other problems and so disrupt the usage of p2p software altogether.

market push

So today the iPhone 1.1.1 firmware came out, with obvious problems for those that have unlocked their phone. It was to be expected, really. I was following Engadget’s posts about the issue and the comments to see exactly the extent to which the firmware affects unlocked phones and I was quite taken aback by some of the opinions people had with regards to the unlocking. Especially what I perceive to be a misunderstanding of some of the reasons for which unlocking is a good thing.

I’ve complained before that companies are rarely, if ever, penalised for loosing personal information of their clients. But here we have a recent case where some punishing is going to be done. Only, to the wrong people.

stupid ideas #17

May 25th, 2007

Why do large outfits insist on buying licenses for some software, when obvious superior replacements are freely and openly available? I don’t even mean Linux instead of Windows, but even crap on Windows.

Give this to your IT admin or whomever else is in charge of software.

work stuff

January 5th, 2006

So I’ve started my work at WebCT and so far I must say I love it =) Testing is a fun job because especially in the beginning there are no precise guidelines to follow, it’s basically your imagination at work to crack the machine. As I was telling a friend, I’m a ‘hacker with a license to hack’, in a James Bond-ian way of thinking about it. But it’s not all that glamorous.

I can’t give more details about my work due to certain NDAs that I had to sign. I can say that the WebCT software has some pretty wicked functionality and I wish my Uni upgraded to a newer version. I mean what I’m working with is actually ‘pretty’ as well =)

In other news I was having dinner tonight and realised that the cafeteria is the great social divide for teenagers. This is where it all starts, in the high schools of the world [that have one]. I suppose Klebold and Harris had a point starting in their cafeteria and not someplace else, maybe they weren’t immediately aware of it but something in their subconscious ‘told’ them to start there. Well, it depends if you let yourself influenced by the masses, if you think they are better than you. A weaker person will always find a way to latch onto what he or she perceives as a stronger person.

Keep hustlin’ =)
