Update of the files worked on my iphone 2.0. BossPref did not. As soon as I turn off edge it will be switched on again.
Updated file (2 entries), rebooted the phone, tested, edge is not longer a problem.
Would be nice to have working tool to do it, but hey, vi file worked as well.

I have been engaged in a running battle with Radian6 for quite some time now, and unfortunately I am not nearly as optimistic as those who have commented before me.

Folks, this bot/spider/crawler and this company ARE malicious. They are not idexing your sites, they are stripping your site content, repackaging it and then charging their clients to view YOUR content. True enough, they are on the lookout for corporate PR info - but they cross the line when they take your content and sell it for a fee. That puts them right up there with the Adsene whores.

Secondly, despite everything Radian6 will tell you, they DO NOT blacklist your site if you complain. Oh, sure enough, they will stop crawling your site long enough for you to forget them, then they pop up again. Their bot is non-compliant when it comes to robots.txt, and I personally feel they deliberately program it so. Check your logs - notice that they always ask for robots.txt AFTER they finish striping the content from your site?

The tactics they are employing today are slighty different than they used to be - when they would call for robots.txt at the same instance they began stripping - and would never halt their activities. For these reasons, it is my opinion that they purposely don't cache robots.txt.

Yeah, I am a bit p-oe'd at this company.

@<a href="#comment-2910" rel="nofollow">ChrisCharles</a>: Thanks for the info!

Yeah, it's hard to turn off data on iPhone, even though Rogers will let you buy the phone without a data plan. If you are roaming, the "Cellular Data Network" menu reappears, allowing you to enter the APN, user and password. So maybe there's a switch someplace to enable it all around, though I haven't poked after that.

This was a GREAT article - thanks so much.

My problem was exactly the same, I had disabled my EDGE previously (firmware 1.1.4), then I upgraded my firmware to 2.0.2, then I then I signed up for Rogers Canada's new $30 / 6 GB / month data plan, where I realized that there was no longer an interface to turn on / off EDGE, except by using the BossPrefs addon.

Even thought BossPrefs has the on / off switch for firmware 2.0.x > you still have to enter the login credentials on some cellular carrier EDGE networks (i.e. Rogers Canada).

Using WinSCP to connect to your iPhone is simple enough...

(there are tons of forums on how to do this out there > http://modmyi.com/wiki/index.php/SSH_on_Windows )

... and then you can navigate pretty easily to the path listed in the original post.

(/var/preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist)

Double clicking on the file " preferences.plist " in WinSCP should open it up in your default text viewer (i.e. Notepad). You can use the " Find " tool in your text editor to find the test strings mentioned above: (" AllowNetworkAccess " and " Available "), making sure they are both set to "1" to enable EDGE.

Then you can do another " Find " to find the strings for:

1) APN
2) User
3) Password

As of the date of this post (09/18/2008), all I needed to add to join the Rogers EDGE network was the " APN " string which is:

1) APN = internet.com

If you're Googling this subject, you might find older articles that mention that you need 3 strings:

1) APN: internet.com
2) User: wapuser1
3) Password: wap

... but I did not need to put the " User " or " Password " in my preferences.plist file.

After all that, just reboot your phone and you're ONLINE via EDGE!

P.S. I think it's funny that the carriers got together with Apple to "hide" the EDGE on / off feature > this way you are ALWAYS on their EDGE internet, so if you or someone else (like a kid) accidentally access the browser / mail > you'll be racking up that per MB bandwidth charge! warn your friends and / or get a cheap data plan [I've seen some that start as low as $2] just my 2 cents....

@<a href="#comment-2908" rel="nofollow">greg</a>: You should use BossPrefs, it is now working on all firmwares and it doesn't require SSH access and mucking about with anything on your own. You should be able to find it in Cydia—make sure you read 'The New Edge Toggle' pop-up when you first start it.

@<a href="#comment-2852" rel="nofollow">Jeffery</a>: I did not mean to have my piece a counter to yours, as I am neither involved nor particularly interested in what those guys are up to. It is just the first phrase in there that drew my attention, a point I thoroughly disagree with. I have heard these complaints about anonymity on the Internet from more and more people as of late. People asking others to 'reveal' their identities, as if there is some sudden added value to what one wrote, if a name is there besides it. I just do not see that, either way I look at it. The Bard asked the question, any my answer is 'Nothing but a brand'.

If someone is being a troll (with implied jackassery) and their 'victim' is feeding them attention, I cannot think of any reason why trolling would stop. And I cannot find any sympathy for the 'victim' either. As for owning up, someone that is liable to be a jackass has little to no concern about being called on it; how many 'real-life' jackasses have you met that displayed any genuine remorse for their actions?

Of course, some people discount ideas solely based on the lack of a name attached to them. It is up to each one of us to decide what "subject matter authority" is all about.

As for owning up, someone that is liable to be a jackass has little to no concern about being called on it; how many ‘real-life’ jackasses have you met that displayed any genuine remorse for their actions?

Of course, some people discount ideas solely based on the lack of a name attached to them. It is up to each one of us to decide what “subject matter authority” is all about.

That's a ridiculous mistatement of what I said. You make it sound like I'm against Rwandan refugees or something, "had no voice before they found the web". Let's be clear we're not talking about a put upon minority, we're talking about people with internet access being jackasses online about mundane things like politics or whether or not they wanted to read about this resturant or that.

Not putting ones name to something emboldens them to say things they wouldn't normally not because they're afraid of someone punching them in the face, which you suggests would be the direct result of not being nameless, but simply because they don't have to own up to how much of a jackass they're being.

If something's not worth putting a name to, then it's probably not worth saying in the first place.

Now there might be legitimate reasons for wanting to remain nameless, but let's be honest 99% of the time it's just because someone wants to be a dick without anyone knowing that it's them.

So, on a 3G iphone, how do I configure the wap.voicestream.com settings? There are no settings dialogue available to enter the string.

I have a 3G that is pwned, running on TMobile with a sim chip hack.

I called Rogers and told them I had 'just bought' a used iPhone and that I noticed it was doing EDGE traffic. I said I was worried about getting charged badly and they told me that you only have to pay charges if you've received SMS warnings about your usage. I told them I haven't received any and they confirmed that none had been sent. This is odd because Rogers sends the first one at $10 usage, then $25 and so on. Anyway, they were sympathetic with me and said if I received a data charge on my bill, I could call in and they would credit my account.

They also offered me the $30/month for 6GB, but I turned it down because it's a 3 year contract... not exactly the kind of commitment I want to get into.

So basically I got away with it. After I went into the plist files and neutered the EDGE function.

So there you have it. If you're in my situation, use this post as a reference. Thanks for your help INAEQUITAS.

Cheers, Axiom.
