Leak or just a very well hidden feature? Well, after poking around with one of my GMail accounts on my iPhone last night, I noticed in the morning it seemed to be behaving as IMAP would. Last I checked - about a month ago - GMail did not support IMAP. But a quick search got me to this page.
I will try these settings on some more clients once I get home and see if they work as advertised. Finally, GMail over IMAP will rule the world of e-mail once and for all :)1
UPDATE: At the time of writing I was nowhere near my computer to be able to check my RSS feeds. Ars wrote about this as did others. The program is being slowly rolled to users and I’m not yet seeing the option in my settings. However, my iPhone seems to be doing just fine in syncing back and forth to the server and, contrary to the instructions above, I had done it by clicking on the GMail icon from the “Add new account” menu.
So rejoice, all of ye, for GMail has brought us all IMAP to better keep in touch.
