I don’t think this is what recursion in computing is meant to be…

takedown - HLS

August 20th, 2007

Huntingdon Life Sciences has been engaged in animal testing for a few decades now and has been repeatedly exposed in the media for their cruel treatment of animals. Were this really providing an advance in medical research, some might be tempted to give them a slack for it - but cosmetic products, fertilizers, dyes and artificial sweeteners hardly justify anything.

facebook DMCAs

August 17th, 2007

So some Facebook code got leaked in a bunch of places so obviously the guys sent around DMCA notices [I got wind of it when on the BinRev Forums the mods had to edit some parts of a thread to remove some of that code.]

But! The code can still be found in Google’s cache so I got my copy - and made a mirror in .jp  I won’t link to it for various reasons, but it is available for those that want it.

move the web in RSS

August 13th, 2007

I am a strong supporter of RSS. I try to publish all my sites with a full feed to ease access to information and try to find ways around restrictions, technological1 or otherwise, that would prevent me from sharing as much as I can.

So, taking this a step forward, I think we should start considering moving large parts of the web completely into RSS - with a few changes.

iPhone applications and hacks - what they mean

August 13th, 2007

Apple closed the iPhone down fairly tightly and haven’t provided a toolkit for developers to play with and compile their application with. No matter: Nightwatch made one. They haven’t allowed instant messaging. Other people made their own1, even a video conferencing client. A few thoughts on all of this.

Firefox Supercharged

August 6th, 2007

Beyond the superior rendering capabilities and improved security that Firefox provides, another reason I love using it lies in the power that Extensions provide to the user. Since historically speaking, Firefox was meant as a lightweight browser, it allows extensibility through various add-ons that the user may find useful. Here’s my power-user, supercharged version of FF1.

Firefox Supercharged

As you may be able to tell, I’ve tried to dedicate as much space as possible to viewing websites and less to the things I don’t use [like navigation buttons.] Here’s what I have [click the pic above for the full-size rendition] and how I browse:

  1. Bon Echo used to be the codename for Firefox 2. Since the main Mozilla team has been slow to use Mac OS X’s native buttons and look and feel, somebody very nice made a minor ‘port’ of sorts - but due to obvious copyright issues the name and logo were changed. Regardless, whatever you do in Bon Echo is automatically synchronized with vanilla Firefox - this means history, bookmarks, plugins etc []

surveys

August 6th, 2007

surveys are biased because many people refuse to take them. our sample sizes are always the willing - they form a trend that’s removed from the norm already.

brain purge

  1. My name means “Protector of Man”. This is so not helping with my delusions of grandeur and incessant soapbox ranting.
  2. It’s funny people clean their caches to speed things up; it’s exactly for that reason we have caches in the first place.
  3. I hate remembering I have good ideas that I don’t write down. Coding or writing or whatever - I have to make myself a centralized repository. A wiki sounds appropriate - or maybe a CMS, in case some of these projects become public.
  4. <I’ll keep this an open list…>
